The skin is usually prone to various diseases. White spots on the skin are a common skin problem faced by most of the individuals. White spots on skin are usual complaints of people specifically teens and young adults especially in the summer season. It usually occur for some years before the affected person comes in for treatment, because it often tends to disappear in the winter, and the affected person believes its gone for good. But in the summer after several days in the sun, they are back. These white spots on the skin can occur on all the parts of the body like above the nose, over the fingers, on the hands, and legs, etc. Many types of white spots usually do not cause irritation, hurt or itch, but they can be noticeable on tanned skin or dark skin, and most people find them quite distressing.

What Causes White Spots on Skin

The medical term for white spots on skin is leucoderma vitiligo. It is a skin disease in which the skin color loses badly due to some environmental causes or some genetic causes. The immune deficiency of the skin may be considered as the main problem of white spots on skin. Color of the cells is lost as a result of immune deficiency and vitiligo disorder, which leads to white spots on the skin.

Another cause that leads to white patches on skin is exposing the skin to extreme sunburn. Enormous stress may also be considered as a cause for these white spots on skin. Certain foods will also encourage the vitiligo to develop the skin damage.

The white spots develop as patches of white skin without any tan or pigment. White spots on skin are very common in persons suffering from autoimmune diseases. Adrenocortical insufficiency is considered as one of the causes. The adrenal gland is the key element for producing corticosteroid hormone. Adrenocortical insufficiency disease occurs when our body faces a deficiency of this hormone.

White Spots and Tanning Salons

Whether from fungus or from the exposure intensity, lots of people who go for tanning salons could be prone to white spots on their skin. Some prescriptions, such as oral acne medications, birth control tablets, etc., can interfere with the skin’s normal tone and make it even more sensitive to light, which ultimately results the skin to tan unevenly, which tends to develop white spots on skin.

Pityriasis Alba

Pityriasis Alba is a skin disease of round or oval white patches, which appears on the skin. The patches always appear on the face, neck, torso and upper arms, and are most common in teenagers and children, especially with tanned skin. They are treated with topical cream prescription and do clear up, but sometimes they return.

Treatments for White Spots on Skin

Most of the time, only topical treatments are suggested by doctors for skin disorders including vitiligo, eczema, and acne. However, some oral pills may also be prescribed if the skin problem is severe. Another method for the cure of white spots on skin is exposure to sunlight for long time or to go for an artificial phototherapy. When the skin is exposed to light, cells that cause pigmentation become active. You can also use variety of cosmetics to cover up the white spots.

However, you should undergo a medical treatment for a permanent cure before it may become widespread and uncontrollable. A good and effective treatment is vital for avoiding frustration, psychological effects, and embarrassment.

Currently, laser and medical and surgical treatments are done for treating the white spots. With surgical treatment, the affected skin will be removed by a procedure.

Other treatments might include seeing your dermatologist for light-emitting treatments (such as Fraxel) that target the brown spots surrounding the white spots. There are other options that include a topical application of a drug known as tacrolimus (brand name Protopic). This drug, which normally is prescribed to treat eczema, is believed to help re-pigment the white spots, although the research hasn’t been that positive. Always check with your doctor about these applications. Do not expect a huge improvement from these treatments, but they can help.

Gently applying a tanning product by using a Q-tip can also help. Using a small amount can blend in color to the white spots on your skin.

Melanocytes cause pigmentation; they are located in the skin. As the medical science is so advanced nowadays, it is now possible to transplant these cells from some other part of the body to the affected skin area. As a result of this transplantation, white spots on skin or vitiligo can be fully cured.

There are some other skin diseases or disorders in which the skin color tends to become lighter or darker from the normal shade. Before using any of the treatments for vitiligo it is better to seek a dermatologist’s advice and confirm the symptoms.
