Skin Dermatitis Helped By Vitamins and Minerals
There are several types of skin dermatitis, which is described as being a skin rash that can be itchy, red, oozing, crusty, scaly or swollen.
When a Dermatologist or other doctor diagnoses dermatitis, a topical cream or an oral drug is usually prescribed to treat it. Although these therapies work, they do not get to the root cause of the irritation. It is important to follow the doctor's orders to treat the rash but it is also important to try to prevent the condition from coming back.
Most of the skin's organisms live in harmony with the body. Dermatitis happens when the skin becomes less healthy and allows organisms to multiply, which results in a rash. Often, the cause of this weakness is due to a deficiency in the trace mineral selenium. The body has a compound called glutathione peroxidase, which helps the immune system eliminate threatening populations of organisms on the skin. Selenium hooks up with other substances in the body to form this compound. A selenium-deficient individual is more likely to be less resistant to several different types of skin dermatitis. Foods high in selenium are brazil nuts, walnuts, oats, wheat, rice, corn, tuna, beef, chicken, cheese and eggs. A supplement may be taken to get enough of this mineral. We only need a small amount of it. Too much can result in toxic levels in the body and cause other problems. It is not recommended to take more than 190 micrograms of selenium a day. According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, eating two Brazil Nuts a day will give us all we need.
Selenium is also an antioxidant. Antioxidants help repair injured and damaged skin by removing free radicals, which are molecules that oxidize and destroy healthy cells. There are important antioxidant vitamins that are needed for optimum skin health.
Beta-Carotene is a critical antioxidant and we need 12 to 18 milligrams of it a day. Great sources of beta-carotene are sweet potatoes, carrots, cantaloupe, mangoes, papaya, pumpkin, cabbage, yellow squash and spinach.
Next, we need 3,000 milligrams of Vitamin C daily. Some good sources of this vitamin are strawberries, cauliflower, broccoli, sweet red bell peppers, oranges, kiwi, grapefruit, papaya, cantaloupe, cabbage, tomatoes, raspberries, celery, pineapple, watermelon, tangerines, limes, guava and cranberries.
Vitamin E is also essential for healthy skin. We need 60 to 800 international units of it per day. Some excellent sources of this vitamin are sunflower seeds, almonds, spinach, papaya, olives, avocado, bell pepper, Brussels sprouts, kiwifruit, tomato, blueberries, and broccoli.
Zinc is the final suggested vitamin to help with skin dermatitis. Women need 20 milligrams and men need 30 milligrams of it daily. Foods containing zinc are dairy products, whole grains, beef, chicken, pork, shellfish, potatoes, broccoli, pecans, cashews and eggs.
Fatty acids are also important to reduce the inflammation of dermatitis. These fatty acids can be found in flaxseed, borage seed, and fish oils containing omega-3, omega-6, omega-9.
Skin Dermatitis can also be caused by a sensitivity to foods. Common food allergies are dairy, wheat, sugar, corn, soy, peanut butter, chocolate, coffee, citrus fruits and alcohol. Blood tests can detect which foods are causing the problem so that they can be eliminated from the diet. Although eating a healthy diet is the best way to get enough of the vitamins and minerals we need in the body, it is not always possible because of these food allergies.
